Residents in Cherry Hinton have been working for a number of years to bring forward plans to extend and enhance the community facilities available to residents at Cherry Hinton Library.
Residents have long argued that additional facilities are needed by the community, and a review of community
facility provision by the City Council completed in 2017, supported this view as it identified a gap in community facility provision in Cherry Hinton, and recommended support for expansion of the library to include a community hub.
The library building and the flats above are owned Cambridge City Council, and the County Council operates the library service. Both are now working closely with Cherry Hinton Residents Association (CHRA) and the Royal British Legion to provide support to help bring forward plans for the new community hub.
The Royal British Legion has offered to part-fund the cost of the scheme in order that they can be based from the hub to deliver outreach services in future.
A local Architects practice Ingleton Wood Martindale’s Ltd has been appointed to develop the concept scheme and initial cost estimates for the scheme.
The proposal is to extend the footprint of the current library building, and to ensure that these spaces are flexible so that they can be opened up to incorporate the existing library space, and create one big space for larger community gatherings.
The proposed facilities within the new hub include:
A new kitchen to provide a community café, A secure outdoor café, seating area, New toilets and baby changing small 1:1 meeting space meeting room than can accommodate up to 15 people, A large meeting room that can accommodate up to 30 people, A new access system that will enable residents to access the library outside of staffed opening times an additional storage
